ALLSOP Clifford Victor: Pte 4972863
Cliff Allsop of Sutton Coldfield on 20 June 2003 aged 89. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1932 and served with the 1st Battalion. In 1939 he served with the 1st/5th Battalion and was taken into captivity on the fall of Signapore. Cliff spent two and a half years working on the Burma-siam Railway before being transported to Japan to work in the coal mines as forced labour.
ANDERSON Roy: Cpl 23418860
Roy Anderson of Bilborough, Nottingham on 21 December 2005 aged 70. He was called up for National Service in 1957 and enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters. On completion of training at Normanton Barracks, Derby on 29 November he was posted to 1st Bn The Royal Warwickshire Regiment in Ballykinler, Northern Ireland where he became a member of the Regimental Police.
ALDRIDGE Frank: Pte 14300235
Frank Aldridge of Quidenham, Norwich on 2 May 2006 aged 82. He served in A Company 2nd/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters joining during the Italian Campaign. He remained in the Battalion during its operations in Greece from December 1944 to April 1945 and subsequently during its occupation role in Austria.
ALLEN Ronald Archibald: Pte 4975889
Ron Allen of Leicester on 30 December 2005 aged 84. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in May 1938 and joined the 1st Battalion serving with it in Palestine and Cyprus. Then in January 1942 the Battalion moved to Egypt and by June was in the defence of Tobruk. He was taken POW in the surrender of the British Forces on 21 June, taken to Italy from where he escaped to Switzerland and remained there until being repatriated at the end of the War..
ALTON Ernest
Ernest Alton of Selston, Nottinghamshire in October 2003 aged 83. He enlisted into the 9th Bn The Sherwood Foresters and served in the 1940 campaign in France where he was wounded and evacuated through Dunkirk.
ALTON Reginald Ernest: Lieutenant MC
Reginald Alton of Oxford on 15 December 2003 aged 83. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1939 and was commissioned in the 9th Bn in August 1940. He remained with the Bn when it re-roled as 112 Regiment RAC in 1941 and served with it until late 1944 when he was transferred to the 11th Hussars where he was awarded his MC in January 1945.
ARCHER Albert Edward Dennis: Pte 23467455
Albert Archer of the Vale, Guernsey on 5 December 2005 aged 68. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in March 1956 and following training at Normanton Barracks was posted to the 1st Bn in Germany as a member of C Company.
ASTILL Dennis: Pte 14188490
Dennis Astill of St Anns, Nottingham on 14 October 2005 aged 77. He enlisted into the General Service Corps in 1946 and following training he was posted to the 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters in Germany. He served in Hildesheim and Goslar as a member of the Battalion Education Staff.
BANNISTER Albert: Pte 4981568
Albert Bannister of Jacksdale Nottinghamshire on 5 February 2003. He served with 1/5th Bn The Sherwood Foresters and was taken prisoner by the Japanese on the fall of Singapore.
BARKER Jason: Pte 25034903
Jason Barker of Fareham, Hampshire on 11 November 2005 aged 35. He enlisted into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters in 1974 and served with the 1st Battalion in UK Canada and Bosnia. He left the Army in1997 as a result of an injury which made him unfit for further military service.
BATES Albert William BEM: WO2 (CSM) 22772416
Bill 'Bomber' Bates of Alvaston Derby on 11 December 2005 aged 72. Bomber enlisted into the 2nd Bn The Sherwood Foresters in 1951. He was posted to the 1st Bn in 1955 and in 1958 served in Malaya with A Coy. Bomber was with the 1st Bn on amalgamation in 1970 and took over WFR Assault Pioneers at Tidworth. He was posted as PSI to the Mercian Volunteers and then on leaving the Regular Army joined 3 WFR (V).
BAXTER Edmund Walter: Sgt 14747900
Eddie Baxter of Lydd-on-Sea on 15 January 2006 aged 81. He enlisted into the Royal West Kent Regiment in July 1944 serving with it until October 1946 when he re-enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters and joined the 1st Battalion in Germany. He remained with the Battalionuntil 1952 serving in Hamburg and Goslar in the Machine Gun Platoon.
BELL Brian Lawrence: LCpl 23447743
Brian Bell of Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire on 22 April 2005 aged 68. He enlisted into the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment as National Serviceman in 1958 and on completion of training was posted to 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters, then in transit for Malaya. He left the Army in 1960.
BLANDY Patrick H: Major
Patrick Blandy of East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire on 16 May 2003 aged 90. He was commissioned into the 7(Robin Hood) Battalion The Sherwood Foresters in July 1931 and on the outbreak of War in 1939 was posted to the 9th Battalion, evacuated through Dunkirk and then appointed Adjutant 2nd/5th Battalion. In 1942 he was posted to the 8th Battalion.
BOOTH J H: Sgt 4978450
Johnny Booth of Mosborough Sheffield on 13 May 2005 aged 86. He enlisted into the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on the outbreak of the Second World War serving in France and being evacuated through Dunkirk. After 2 years on UK Defence duties he was with the Battalion when it took part in the Tunisian Campaign of 1943 and then the landings at Salerno, then the subsequent fighting up Italy and the attack on the Gothic Line. He served in Greece and Austria from where he was demobbed in 1946. He was Mentioned in Despatches in November 1945 in recognition of his gallant and distinguished services in Italy.
BROADBENT Donald: Major TD
Don Broadbent of Killinghall, Harrogate on 14 February 2006 aged 80. He served with the Green Howards in World War 2 and in 1946 he joined 8 Bn Sherwood Foresters in Newark. He was promoted Captain in 1952 and in 1958 was promoted Major taking over command of C Coy in Worksop.
BROOKE-TAYLOR Martin: Capt 414176
Martin Brooke-Taylor of Buxton on 25 March 2006 aged 74. He was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters from Eaton Hall OCTU in 1950 during National Service and was seconded to the Somaliland Scouts. In 1952 He joined the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters serving with it and the 5th/8th Battalion until 1969.
BROOKES Anthony: Sgt 24213252
Anthony 'Brookie' Brookes of Bracknell Berkshire on 3 February 2004 aged 52. He enlisted into the WFR in 1970 and was awarded Best Recruit. He served with the 1st Bn in northern Ireland, Cyprus, Germany and UK and represented the Battalion at Bisley as a member of the shooting team.
BOSELEY Ernest: Pte 49866780
Ernie Boseley of Nottingham on 16 January 2003. He served with the 2nd Bn The Sherwood Foresters (1942 - 1947)
BURT Ernest Leslie: CSgt 4978166
Les Burt of Derby on 11 April 2005 aged 86. He enlisted into the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on the outbreak of WW2 and served on coastal defence in East Anglia. He then moved to India in October 1942 where it was deployed on Internal Security Duties in Delhi. He remained in India when the Battalion was re-rolled as a jungle training unit. He returned to the UK in December 1946 for demobilisation following the Battalion's disbandment.
BUTLER Bernard Gordon: Major
Bernard Butler of Mayfield Hall, Ashbourne, Derbyshire on 13 July 2003. He was commissioned into 5th Bn The Sherwood Foresters in July 1936 and on the outbreak of War, went with the Battalion to France where he was taken prisoner during the retreat to Dunkirk.
CAPE Reginald George Albert: WO2 (CSM) 4975505
Reg Cape of Spondon, Derbyshire on 12 October 2003 aged 84. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1937. He fought in France with the BEF then with the 1/5th Battalion was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Singapore. He was in Prisoner Working Battalion No 8, 4 Group and worked on the Burma Railway. On 1 October 1945 he was evacuated from Rangoon on SS Chiteral. He later joined 3rd Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment as a Territorial and served with them until 1974.

Ron Cleveley of Wychbold on 29 January 2003. He served with the 14th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters where he was awarded his MM then with the 2nd/5th Battalion.
COATES Harry: Pte 5962536
Harry Coates of Wakefield, West Yorkshire on 19 December 2003 aged 78. He joined the 2/5th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1943 from DCLI and served with them in the Middle East, Italy, Greece and Austria until his demob in 1947.
COLLISON Michael Richard: Cpl 23708459
Mick Collison of colchester on 20 October 2005 aged 63. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1959 and following training was posted to the 1st bn in Burma Camp, Malaya where he joined 5 Pl B Coy. He also served in Singapore, Northern Ireland, Cyprus. After leaving the Army in 1965 he re-enlisted in 1969 rejoining the 1st Bn at minden. After amalgamation he continued to serve with the Regiment in Berlin, Ballykelly and Colchester.

Geoffrey Coombs of Petersfield, Hants on 22 January 2004 aged 89. He joined the 2/5th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1943 from the Somerset Light Infantry. He served in Tunisia, Italy, Middle East, Greece and Austria until his demob.

Peter Craze of Watford Herts on 14 February 2006 aged 82. He enlisted into the 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters in 1942 serving in UK and Tunisia. In 1944 he was posted to the Green Howards.
DAMMS Douglas: Pte
Dougie Damms of Belper, Derbyshire on 21 June 2006. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in1942 serving in UK and Tunisia. He was part of the landing force which captured the Island of Pantellaria which surrendered without a shot being fired in its defence. He fought with the Battalion at the Anzio Beachhead and the subsequent campaign up Italy. From February 1945 to the end of 1947 he was in Palestine with the Battalion and was discharged on its return to UK.
DAVIS Saville: Pte 4986035
Sav Davis of St Anns Nottingham on 6 March 2003. He served with the 70th (Young Soldiers) Bn and the 2/5th Bn The Sherwood Foresters, later transferred to the Parachute Regiment and participated in the Arnhem landings.
DAVIES James: Pte 4984577
Jim Davies of Wigan on 1 September 2006 aged 86. He was conscripted into the Sherwoo dForesters in January 1940 and served with the 2nd Battalion, initially on Home Defence and then moving to North Africa in February 1943 to take part in the Tunisian Campaign. He was transferred to the 14th Battalion in March 1944 and took part in the fighting at the Anzio Beachhead. He remained with the Battalion during the difficult campaign up Italy and which culminated in the Battle of San Savino. On the disbandment of the 14th Battalion he moved with Lt Col Gofton-Salmond to a series of different units in which he remembered wearing seven different cap badges in succession. He was demobilised in July 1946.

George Dean of St Anns Nottingham on 6 June 2005 aged 92. He joined the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in 1942 and became a member of the anti-tank platoon. He took part in the Tunisian Campaign, The Salerno Landings, the fighting up Italy and the attack on the Gothic Line. He served in Greece and Austria from where he was demobilised at the end of the War.
EVERITT Michael: Lieutenant
Michael Everitt of Norwich on 26 December 2005 aged 73. He served with the Northamptonshire Regiment as a Private before being commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters in 1958. He was posted to the 1st Battalion in Malaya where he joined C Company.
FAUVELLE Michael Henry: Maj 112857
Michael Fauvelle of Wherwell Andover on 8 October 2005 aged 85. He joined the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters from the South Lancashire Regt on 1 February 1944 taking over the command of B and C Companies after the Battle of Campoleone in the Anzio Beachhead. After recovering from wounds received in the battalion attack on Buonriposo he continued with the 2nd Battalion in the campaign up Italy and the attack on the Gothic Line. In mid September 1944 he was severely wounded and was subsequently evacuated back to the UK before leaving the Army in April 1945.
FENTON Arthur Jesse: Pte 4978338
Mickey Fenton of Gedling Nottingham on 31 October 2005 aged 86. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1939 and joined the 1/5th Battalion. During the withdrawal from France in 1940 he was embarked on HMT Lancastria and was one of the survivors following the bombing and sinking of the ship on 17 June 1940. In 1942 he was posted to the Seaforth Highlanders with whom he served until leaving the Army in 1946.

Roi French of Buxton, Derbyshire on 13 January 2006 aged 60. He served with the Worcestershire Regiment and continued to serve with the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment after amalgamation.

Spike Gamble of Aspley Nottingham on 12 January 2003. He enlisted into the 70th (Young Soldiers) Bn then transferred to 2/5th Bn The Sherwood Foresters where he served throughout the Second World War.
GREATOREX Horace James: LCpl 4979045
Horace Greatorex of Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire on 29 August 2005 aged 85. He joined the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foreters in Italy from the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was wounded during the beachhead fighting in Anzio but remained with the Battalion throughout the Italian Campaign. On the disbandment of the 14th Battalion he was cross posted to the 5th Battalion with which he served as a member of the Pioneer Platoon for the remainder of the War.
HALLAM Raymond: Sgt 23710545
Skin Hallam of Nottingham on 27 September 2003 aged 67. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in June 1959 and following training at the Depot in Derby joined the 1st Battalion in Malaya. In 1963 he was selected to join the SAS serving in various locations until his return to the Battalion in 1967. He served with the 1st Battalion until amalgamation in 1970 with the Worcestershire Regiment when he joined 1 WFR. He remained with the Battalion throughout tours in Berlin, Northern Ireland and UK until retiring in 1977.

Sydney Handson of Wrangle Nr Boston Lincs on 27 July 2003. He served with HQ Company 2/5th Bn The Sherwood Foresters in UK, Tunisia, Italy, Middle East, Greece and Austria.

Henry Hardy of Newark Nottinghamshire on 7 August 2003 aged 69. He started National Service in July 1952 and following training at the Depot in Derby, joined 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in Colchester.

Wayne Harris of Kidderminster on 1 August 2005 aged 37. He enlisted into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment on 20 August 1984. He served in Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Bosnia. He left the Army in 2001.
HARVEY Ernest Chasteney: CSgt 4982385
Ernest Harvey of Bromley, Kent on 20 November 2005 aged 92. He enlisted in 1940 joining the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters shortly after its formation in Derby. He took part in the Battle of El Alamein and then Anzio where he was seriously wounded. Following recovery he rejoined the Battalion for the heavy fighting in the Gothic Line. After VE Day he was deployed in a relief unit to Austria. He left the Army in 1946.
HAYNES James: Cpl 4983058
Jim Haynes of Chaddesdden, Derby on 11 August 2003 aged 81. Jim enlisted into the Young Soldiers Battalion in 1940 then moved to the 2nd Battalion in North Africa. Served at Anzio where he was wounded by shrapnel and hospitalised in Naples, upon recovery he returned to the Battalion where he sustained a smashed jaw from shrapnel and was returned yet again to the hospital in Naples. Finally returned to the Battalion in the Italian Alps where in 1944 his left lumbar region was blown away by shrapnel. He was returned to England and discharged.
HENSHAW John: Sgt 22522830
Jack Henshaw of Bedworth, Warwickshire on 29 November 2005 aged 78. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1945 but transferred to the Parachute Regiment and later the SAS. He returned to the 1st Battalion in BAOR in 1955 and also served as a Pl Sgt in Malaya. He continued to serve with the 1st Battalion until leaving the Army in 1970.
HIRST David: Pte 14354667
David Hirst of Sheffield on 22 March 2003. He served with the 2nd/5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters. He was wounded twice during the subsequent campaign in Italy but remained with the Battalion serving in the Middle East, Greece and Austria as a member of 18 Platoon D Coy. He was demobilised in May 1947.
HUCKLE Wilfred: Pte 4981678
Wilfred Huckle of Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 29 September 2003 aged 90. He joined the 5th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1939 and remained with them until being wounded and subsequently discharged in 1942.
HUGHES Cliff: LCpl 1529035
Cliff Hughes of Cirencester on 13 February 2006 aged 89. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery (Heavy Anti Aircraft) in 1939, serving in UK, India, North Africa, until the unit was disbanded in Italy in 1944. He joined the Sherwood Foresters and was posted to the 2/5th Battalion in Greece. Following VE Day he moved with the Battalion to Austria as part of the Army of Occupation.

Bert Ireland of Chaddesden, Derbyshire on 8 November 2003 aged 81. He joined the 1st Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1943 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion in 1944. He was wounded at Anzio in February 1944 at Buonriposo Ridge and after recovering rejoined the 2nd Battalion, where he remained until his demob in 1946.

Jim Jenkins of Claydon, Buckinghamshire on 18 June 2006. After training he joined the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment and served in Berlin. He returned to civilian life in 1982.

Paul Kaye of Derby on 27 November 2005 aged 49. He enlisted into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in 1972 and served with the battalion in Northern Ireland. He left the Army in 1982.
KENWORTHY Joseph Edward: WO2 (CSM) 22229338
Joe Kenworthy of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire on 26 August 2005 aged 75. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1948 and attached to Royal Leicesters 1948 - 1954. He fought in the Korean War and was held POW in North Korea for nearly 2 years. He then served with the King's African Rifles in Kenya 1954 - 1956 leaving the Regular Army in 1956. He served with 8 FORESTERS 1957 - 1961 and then joined 3 WFR in 1971 leaving in the rank of WO2 in 1981.
KNOWLES Eric Ronald: Pte 14524362
Eric Knowles of Kirby le Soken, Essex on 1 June 2006 aged 83. He enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment but was transferred to the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters serving with it in the Anzio Beachhead. He was later transferred to the 2nd/5th Battalion, still in Italy, where he earned the nickname "Anzio Joe". He remained with the Battsalion throughout the fighting in Italy, the operations in Greece and its role of occupation in Austria at the end of the War. He was demobilised in 1945.

Dennis Legg of Derby on 15 April 2005 aged 85. He joined the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in 1940 serving with it through the War in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy. In September 1944 he was posted to 6th Battalion the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was demobilised in 1946.
LEIGHTON A W: RSM 4971799
Alf (Tubby) Leighton of Spondon, Derbyshire on 20 December 2004 aged 92. Served in the 1st Battalion the Sherwood Foresters. Taken POW at Tobruk he rejoined the Battalion in 1945 and went on to serve as CSM C Coy. In October 1950 he was appointed RSM at the Depot and remained there until discharge in 1952..
LITTON Peter George Marshall OBE: Brigadier
Peter Litton of Salisbury on 22 May 2006 aged 86. He was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters from RMC Sandhurst on 3 July 1939 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion at Bordon, Hampshire. From September 1939 to 1942 he served with the 8th Batalion and later , for a short time with the reformed 1st Battalion in the UK. In March 1943 he was appointed Adjutant of the 2nd/5th battalion in north Africa and took part in the Tunisian Campaign and the invasion of Italy at Salerno. His career in Italy was culminated when he was taken prisoner at the River Volturno Crossing in October 1944. He spent the next two years as a POW in Germany and was released on the German surrender. In May 1945 he was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Battalion. From 1947 to 1948 he served as Company commander in the 1st Battalion at Hamburg and at Goslar. From 1948 to 1950 he was Adjutant/Training Major at Nottingham University OTC and in 1951 he attended the Sataff College, Camberley. Later, he attended the Royal Navy staff College at Greenwich. From 1952 to 1954 he was GSO 2, Allied Staff Berlin and then joined 2nd Battalion in 1954 as a Company Commander until amalgamation with the 1st Battalion in July 1955. From 1956 to 1958 he was GSO2 in the small GHQ UKLF planning cell and then took up the appointment of Second in Command of the 1st Battalion in Malaya. In 1960 he was DAAG at the War Office before being appointed to command the 1st Battalion in 1962. Initially the Battalion was in Northern Ireland but later it joined 19 Brigade in Colchester where it was flown to Cyprus where fighting had broken out between the Greek and Turkish communities; for his services there he was awarded the OBE in the 1965 Honoiurs List. From 1964 to 1966 he was GSO1 at the School of Infantry, Warminster following which he was appointed Commander 99 Gurkha Infantry Brigade responsible for parts of Southern Malaya, Signapore and Brunei. His next appointment from 1969 to 1971 was that of DAG at HQ BAOR in Rheindahlen. This was followed by a tour as Deputy Commander Eastern District at colchester during which he was appointed ADC to Her Majesty The Queen. He retired from the Army in 1974. Brigadier Peter served as Deputy Colonel of The Regiment 1972 - 1977 and he was also President of The Sherwood Foresters Association for the same period. On 1 March 1977 he assumed the appointment of Colonel The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, holding that position until 1 March 1983.
LORD Charles Anthony MC: Maj 129626
Tony Lord of Ponteland, Northumberland on 8 October 2005. He was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters on 20 April 1940 from the Royal Engineers and joined 8th Battalion after it returned from the Norway Campaign. He remained with the Battalion until December 1942 when he was transferred to the 16th Battalion which, in January 1943 became the reformed 1st Battalion. In October 1943 he was posted to the 2/5th Battalion in Italy where he took command of A Company prior to the attacks which led to the crossing of the River Gariglianio. He remained with the Battalion when it was taken out of the line to train and rest in Egypt, Palestine and Syria between February and July 1944. On return to the Italian front the Battalion operated on the Adriatic sector and the subsequent assault on the Gothic Line where he won his MC in the fighting over the Rio Cosina. He stayed with the Battalion serving in Greece and then post war in Austria. He left the Army in April 1946.
LOWE G.L.R.: Cpl 4985531
Les Lowe of Edwinstowe Mansfield on 28 November 2003 aged 83. He enlisted into the 70th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1941 later transferring to the 2/5th Battalion with whom he served until being wounded in the Gothic Line Assault in Italy September 1944. In 1972 he joined the Nottinghamshire Army cadet Force and was commissioned, retiring as a Major in 1984 after Commanding B (WFR) Coy Notts ACF.
MARKHAM Reginald: WO2 (RQMS) 4977173
Reg Markham of Calver near Sheffield on 3 July 2003 aged 82. Former member of the 2nd/5th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters, he joined in 1939 and served in France (1940) also action in Tunisia, Italy, Middle East, Greece and Austria.
MIDDLETON Albert: Pte
Albert Middleton of Mackworth, Derby on 6 December 2005. He joined 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters for National service between 1951 and 1953 serving in Germany and Egypt.
MERCER Eric Arthur John: Major
Mike Mercer of Chilmark, Salisbury on 8 November 2003 aged 86. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in March 1940 and was commissioned in November 1940. In March 1941 he was posted to the 14th Battalion and remained with them until September 1944. He then served as a Staff Officer in the Middle East until his discharge on Ordination in 1946. He later became Bishop of Exeter.

Ray Naylor of Sneinton, Nottingham on 6 October 2003 aged 83. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1938 and transferred to the 1st Battalion in March 1939 and served with them until his demob in 1946.
NORLEDGE William: Cpl 4974624
Bill Norledge of Guernsey, Channel Islands on 29 November 2003. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in 1935. with whom he served in North Africa and Italy until his demob in 1945.
NORTON Geoffrey: Sgt 23203459
Geoffrey Norton of Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria on 7 November 2003 aged 71. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1954 serving in BAOR, Libya, Malaya, Singapore and Northern Ireland. Whilst serving in Malaya he was seconded as an Instructor to the Jungle Warfare School Jahore Buru. He left the Regiment in 1969.

Frank Oldershaw of Elvaston Derbyshire on 16 March 2005 aged 74. He enlisted as a National Serviceman into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters in 1953 serving with them in Germany and North Africa.
PEGG Ashley James: LCpl 25139138
'Lee' Pegg of Belper Derbyshire on 15 May 2005. He enlisted into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in 2001 and served in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan.
PEVLAR Samuel:Private 23309352
Samuel Pevlar of Newark, Nottinghamshire on 14 September 2003 aged 69. He joined the 1st Battalion the Sherwood Foresters in May 1956 as a National Serviceman and served in Sennelager.
PINNOCK Herbert: Cpl 4979120
Bert Pinnock of Stapleford, Notts on 12 January 2004 aged 85. He served with the 2/5th Battalion the Sherwood Foresters. He was taken prisoner on 2 March 1943 at Sedgenene in Tunisia and repatriated in 1945.
PROOM David Kendrick: Lt Col
David Proom of Peterstow, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire on 11 June 2006 aged 68. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters and joined the 1st Battalion. By 1968 he had reached the rank of CSgt and was appointed CQMS of Support company. Shortly afterwards he was promoted WO2 and was CSM of Support and B Companies before being promoted to WO1 in 1972 and appointed RSM of 2 WESSEX. In 1973 he returned as RSM of 1 WFR and in 1976 was commissioned as QM and posted to 1 GLOSTERS. He transferred to that Regiment in November 1981.
ROBERTS Royston: Sergeant 4972859
Royston Roberts of Penrith, Australia on 15 February 2004 aged 89. He joined the Sherwood Foresters in July 1932 and was posted to the 1st Battalion in Lichfield. He served with the Bn in Bermuda, Palestine, Cyprus and Egypt. He was taken prisoner at the fall of Tobruk in June 1942 and remained a POW until being repatriated in 1946.
ROGERS Thomas Eric: Sgt 4983394
Thomas Rogers of Horsley Village, Derby on 17 February 2006 aged 90. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1940 and joined 12th Battalion on coastal Defence in East Anglia. In 1942 he moved with the Battalion to Delhi, India where it was engaged on Internal Security Duties. He remained with the Battalion when it underwent intensive jungle training before becoming a Jungle Training Battalion. He was demobbed in 1946.
ROTHWELL Lee: Sgt
Lee Rothwell of Tibshelf, Derbyshire on 25 April 2003. He enlisted into the 3rd Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment 1n 1987, winning the award for best recruit and best shot. He remained with the Battalion until its disbandment in 1999.
SEARCEY Horace: Sgt 1447358
Horace Searcey of Nottingham on 15 April 2006 aged 78. He joined the Home Guard in 1945 towards the end of the Second World War and when he was old enough he enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters. Following training at ITC Lincoln he was transferred to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment serving with them in Hong Kong, Korea and Germany. He became a member of Nottingham WFRA and was President until his death.
SHARPE John Samuel: CSM 4971826
Lofty Sharpe of Southampton on 29 March 2003. He served with The Sherwood Foresters being taken prisoner at Tobruk, escaped in Italy and worked with the partisan movement before becoming an internee in Switzerland.
SHIELS William George Barnett MBE: Major 489383
Bill Shiels of Derby on 28 May 2003. He joined 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters from the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1954 as a Sgt. Commissioned in 1970 he continued to serve with the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters until 1979.
SMITH Samuel gordon: Sgt 14276294
Samuel smith of Underwood Nottingham on 5 December 2005 aged 82. He enlisted into the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in 1942. He served throughout the War with the Battalion in the Intelligence Section firstly in the Tunisian Campaign, the landing in Salerno and the subsequent fighting in Italy. In December 1945 the Battalion operated in Salonika and then moved to Austria where he became the Orderly Room Sergeant, working at one time for the Allied Control Commission. He left the Army in 1948.

Dean Staples of Worksop, Nottinghamshire in 2005 aged 29. He served with the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment from January 1996 until April 1999.
STILLEY Patrick: Pte 4978601
Patrick Stilley of Warmington, Peterborough on 22 July 2003 aged 84. He enlisted into the Regiment in 1939 and served with the 14th Battalion until discharged in July 1944.
STOKES Jason: Sgt 24852123 (SSI C92727)
Jay Stokes of Strelley, Nottingham on 14 November 2003 aged 32. He enlisted into 1 WFR in 1988 serving in Northern Ireland, Cyprus and UK until discharge in 1997. He joined Nottingham Army Cadet Force as a SSgt Instructor in 2000 and was Detachment Commander of A (RGJ) Coy ACF in Ruddington.
STUBBS Thomas William: Lt Col 172318
'John' Stubbs of Heanor, Derbyshire on 19 May 2006 aged 92. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1940 and was commissioned in February 1941, joining the 8th Battalion in Northern Ireland. In 1942 he was osted to the Middle East and atached to Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons for a year before taking up a Staff Captain Q Post. In July 1943 he joined Combined Operations Staff as GSO3 (Recce) involved with planning for assault landings. Following his return to UK in 1944 he joined the Military Mission in South Africa and in 1946 became Adjutant 45 Primary Training Centre, Derby. He joined the Directorate of Public Relations in 1948 and remained in PR until retiring from the Army in 1962 having served in Egypt, Berlin, Malta, Cyprus, Aden and UK in a variety of appointments.
SUDBURY Vernon Cecil Warren: Major MC + Bar
Vernon Sudbury of Godalming surrey on 7 July 2005 aged 87. He was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in 1937. He then transferred to the 1st Battalion serving in Bermuda, Palestine and Cyprus before moving to Egypt in 1941. He won his MC in Palestine in 1939 and in 1944 a Bar after escaping from an Italian POW Camp. He rejoined 2nd FORESTERS and in 1945 returned to Palestine where he served for a further four years. In 1948 he became GSO2 at Salisbury and then Brigade Adjutant at HQ Midland Brigade followed by a posting in 1953 to HQ 49 Brigade, Kenya as DAA & QMG. He then returned to 1 FORESTERS and after a period in command at the Regimental Depot moved to HQ Northern Command as GSO2 Training. He was GSO2 at HQ Singapore Base District and DAQMG at HQ 3 Division before retiring from the Army in 1968.
SYKES Douglas Victor: Major (V)
Douglas Sykes of Bradford on Avon on 18 July 2003 aged 83. Began his career at Nottingham University Officer Training Corps from 1937 - 1939. Took up a commission with the RA in 1940 later transferring to the infantry where he served with the Lincolnshire Regiment, Durham Light Infantry and Cameronians. Joined 5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters after the war.
TIMMONS William: Cpl 4985539
Bill timmons of Mansfield on 8 April 2006 aged 83. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1941 joining the 70th (Young Soldiers) Battalion. In December 1941 he was posted to 1st Battalion The Border Regiment in an airborne role. He served with the BORDERS in North Africa, Sicily and Italy in 1943 before returning to UK in December. He landed with the Battalion at Arnhem in September 1944 where he was taken POW and held in Stalag IV B at Torgau. Following his release at the end of the war he transferred to the Royal Engineers and left the Army in 1946.
TOWLE Joseph: Pte 4975857
Joseph Towle of Nottingham on 11 March 2003. He enlisted into the 1st Battalion in 1938 and served in Palestine, Cyprus and Libya. Taken prisoner in 1942 he remained as a POW until repatriation.
WALLIS Donald Ernest: Cpl 22263586 (formerly 14402628)
Don Wallis of Chellasdon Derbyshire on 18 October 2005 aged 81. He enlisted into the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in August 1942 and served with them throughout until discharge in 1948. He re-enlisted into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters in April 1958 and served with them for 9 years, leaving in 1967.

WHITEHEAD Phillip: Second Lieutenant
Phillip Whitehead MEP of Rowsley Derbyshire on 31 December 2005 aged 68. He enlisted into the Lincolnshire Regiment for National Service in 1956 and was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters in 1957. He was seconded to the West African Frontier Force in The Gambia where he served until his discharge in 1958. He was elected to the European Parliament as a Labour MEP for the East Midlands in 1994, a position which he held at the time of his death.
WHITTEMORE Walter: Cpl 4982329
Walter Whittemore of Daybrook, Nottingham on 30 December 2003. He enlisted into the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters before joining the 2/5th Battalion in Italy in 1943 serving with them until his demob in 1945.
WILD J M: Pte 4986750
Jack Wild of Woodborough, Nottingham on 23 February 2006 aged 86. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters in 1941 and joined the 2nd/5th Battalion in UK and became a member of the Signals Platoon. He sailed to North Africa with the Battalion on Christmas Day 1942. In February and March 1943 the Battalion was engaged in defensive operations in Tunisia and on 2 March at Sedjenane, the Battalion was heavily attacked. Jack was taken POW and held in Italy before being transferred to Stalag IV B at Torgau. He was repatriated at the end of the War.
